She and her husband moved to Winston Salem in 2007 to be closer to their mountain place in Fancy Gap Va. Sandy has studied "Design Theory" and "Elements of Form" through the University of Maryland extension, while living in England in the 60's. She also completed various drawing and painting courses and workshops at the local community college in the 70's. In the 80's, when she was living in the outback of Australia, she was able to pay for her art supplies by selling her work to the tourists. Sandy took her first pottery course in 1998. She enjoys the sculpture and modeling of hand building, and the quickness and symmetry of wheel work. "I love my time alone working with the clay and I honestly get more pleasure in "doing the piece" than in seeing it finished. I probably could work the same 5 pounds of clay over and over again. In fact, sometimes I do." Sandy won her first award when she was 11 years old for a soap carving, and several other awards and ribbons in the 70's and 80's. In 2007 she won the 3rd place prize for her piece "Second Time Around" in the Franklin Square Gallery's Spring Show, in Southport, NC. Her work was also selected for the 2006 Clay lovers Calendar.
